SUMMARY:Milkweed Giveaway at Arlington Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy for a Free Milkweed Giveaway at Arlington Gardens! \nAFC is working to restore critical habitat for monarch butterflies across our region. Habitat loss\, pesticide use\, and climate change have driven monarch populations down by more than 95% since the 1980s. Planting native milkweed is one of the most effective ways you can help—supporting monarch reproduction and rebuilding the habitat they depend on to survive. \nMilkweed will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis\, while supplies last. We’ll have 225\, one-gallon narrowleaf milkweed plants available\, with a max of 3 per person. Upon arrival\, you’ll need to fill out a form with your information in order to receive milkweed. \nPlease note: RSVPing does not guarantee plants but ensures you’ll receive event updates and reminders. Plants are expected to go quickly\, so arrive early! We will send out an alert once all plants are distributed. \nAdditionally\, we will be joined by Ecological Educator Kristy Brauch\, who will host a demonstration table featuring pollinator displays and experiential materials\, and give a short talk about monarchs and milkweed at the beginning of the event. \nEducational materials with planting instructions and tips for caring for your milkweed will be available at the event. To access digital copies\, click here. \nThe giveaway will take place in the Olive Allee on the west side of the garden. Street parking is available in the surrounding area. \nWe’re looking for AFC Ambassadors who are excited to engage with community members and help us distribute milkweed. Please click here to sign up for a volunteer shift. \nNo space for milkweed? Not much of a green thumb? You can still make a difference—urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect monarch butterflies under the Endangered Species Act by signing this petition. Let’s ensure monarchs have a secure future today!

SUMMARY:Millard Canyon Preserve Habitat Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a restoration day at AFC’s Millard Canyon Preserve! \nMillard Canyon is a beautiful sanctuary and corridor for wildlife: with a year-round stream and dense native tree canopy\, it provides thermal refuge and vital habitat in an area surrounded by development. Held on the second Saturday of each month\, restoration events are led by local resident and Meadows Fire Safe Council leader Bill Ramseyer. These workdays provide an opportunity to support habitat restoration and stewardship in the canyon while helping maintain it as a wildlife refuge. \nOur focus is on fire-fuel reduction\, cutting back invasive vegetation and reducing built-up dry material. If you have them\, please bring tools such as weed whackers\, pruners\, loppers\, or other hand tools suitable for cutting and clearing vegetation. \nVolunteers will meet at 9am at the hairpin turn on Canyon Crest Road in Altadena (map). Due to limited parking at the site\, carpooling is encouraged. \nIf you have any questions\, please email our Program Director\, Kyle Cavazos\, at kylecavazos@arroyosfoothills.org\nPlease register using the sign up below.

SUMMARY:Rooted in Nature: Community\, Conservation\, and Crafts
DESCRIPTION:Join Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy for a morning focused on connecting the BIPOC community through nature! Enjoy champurrado and small bites while surrounded by the San Gabriel Mountains at Rosemont Preserve. Through discussions\, crafts\, and connections we’ll explore how the “Nature Gap” affects our communities. \nParticipants will rotate through a series of activities starting with a group discussion. Lastly\, we’ll work together to bring life back to retired flower beds by planting narrowleaf milkweed to help support Monarch butterflies. Together\, these activities work towards environmental justice through community\, crafts\, and conservation. \nAll craft materials and outdoor blankets will be provided. No experience necessary\, just come ready to learn\, create\, and spend time outdoors together! Please bring an outdoor chair if you prefer to sit during our community circle. \nThis event is offered in partnership with the California Climate Action Corps\, a program of the California Volunteers\, Office of the Governor. \nWhen: Saturday June 27th 9am-11:30am \nWhere: Rosemont Preserve – The Preserve is located in La Crescenta at the north end of Rosemont Avenue\, just past the chain link fence. Parking is available at Two Strike Park\, 5107 Rosemont Ave\, where bathrooms are located. \nRSVP here!
