We recommend wearing pants\, long sleeves\, and sturdy shoes. If available\, feel free to bring any of the following tools: shovel\, hand pruner\, or trowel. Other tools and equipment will be available.⁠ \nVolunteers meet at Sunshine Preserve\, near 1370 Sunshine Drive. Street parking is available on Sunshine Drive before Sandringham. SUMMARY:The Future of Devil's Gate Dam: a tour of the Cottonwood Canyon Wildlife Corridor
DESCRIPTION:Join AFC’s Land Manager & Planning Director\, Tim Martinez\, for a guided hike through the Arroyo Seco to explore Lower Cottonwood Canyon and learn about AFC’s plans to restore this important wildlife corridor. Participants will get an introduction to our Devil’s Gate Wildlife Passage and Habitat Planning and Design Project\, which is exploring opportunities to restore native habitat\, remove invasive plants\, and improve wildlife movement through and around Devil’s Gate and south toward Cottonwood Canyon. \nPlease park in the upper lot of Hahamongna Watershed Park and meet near the restrooms: https://maps.app.goo.gl/DaiUS3YLEvFTa1XMA \nWe’ll start at Hahamongna Watershed Park and make our way toward the soft-bottom Arroyo Seco below Devil’s Gate Dam\, where we’ll look at the project area for AFC’s Devil’s Gate Wildlife Passage and Habitat planning work. From there\, we’ll continue south along the Arroyo Seco West Trail to the lower portion of AFC’s Cottonwood Canyon Preserve\, including the area where spring-fed Yokum Creek emerges from the canyon and crosses the trail. \nWe’ll discuss AFC’s long-term vision to restore this area by removing invasive vegetation\, bringing back native cottonwood trees\, and eventually daylighting more of the historic stream. Cottonwood Canyon is an important gateway for wildlife moving between the Arroyo Seco and the San Rafael Hills\, supported by its rare perennial spring. This area is the focus of the next phase of AFC’s Cottonwood restoration work\, including plans to reestablish native cottonwoods in habitat now dominated by non-native vegetation.

DESCRIPTION:Trade your work gloves for hiking boots and join the Friends of Sunshine for a festive fall hike to Tongva Peak! Expect a solid workout\, great conversations\, and plenty of beautiful autumn scenery. \nWHEN: Saturday 31st October\, 8:30am.\nWHERE: Sunshine Preserve to Tongva Peak\, via Las Flores Motorway & Beaudry Motorway trails. \nThis is a beautiful\, moderately challenging 6.25 mile out-and-back hike with 1\,570ft elevation gain. It’s a fantastic way to check out more of our wildlife corridor while earning those evening Halloween treats! \nAt the summit of Tongva Peak (2\,656ft above sea level) you’ll be rewarded with 360° panoramic views of the LA basin\, the Verdugo Mountains\, and the San Gabriel Mountains – with glimpses of the ocean if it’s extra clear! \nPack some tasty delicacies for a social brunch at the peak. Overall\, this hike will take around 3-4 hours\, depending on group pace. Feel free to wear flannels or orange to bring the fall vibes to the trail! \n\n\nWear appropriate hiking shoes\, attire and sun protection.\nBring at least 1.5 – 2 liters of water\, snacks for the trail\, and food for brunch at the peak.\nMeet 8:30am at the welcome boulders at Sunshine Preserve on Sunshine Drive.\nWe will set off at 8:40am prompt.\nReturn time depends on group pace.\n\nRSVP below!
