SUMMARY:Oak Stewardship Day at the Sunshine Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Sunshine Preserve in Glendale for a morning of focused restoration work. Volunteers will help to protect a stand of young Engelmann and coast live oaks and set them up for success in their next life stage. Working in small teams\, participants will build and install new protective cages around saplings\, remove invasive weeds\, and help maintain the health of trees that are part of a long-term oak monitoring and reforestation effort. \nMost of the trees we’ll be caring for are Engelmann oaks. These rare trees are found almost nowhere else in the world outside of Southern California and Baja California\, and their numbers are in decline. Over the past few years\, the Sunshine Preserve has undergone extensive restoration efforts to remove invasive species and establish native plantings. As these young oak trees mature\, they will provide essential shade\, wildlife habitat\, and food sources for native birds\, pollinators\, and insects\, forming the backbone of a restored ecosystem. By protecting these saplings during their most vulnerable years\, volunteers will directly contribute to the long-term ecological recovery of this critical wildlife corridor. \nThe day will begin with an overview of Sunshine’s oak project and demonstrations. Please arrive with sun-protective clothing\, a water bottle\, and gloves (if you have them). Tools will be provided on-site. No experience necessary! \nThis event is hosted in partnership with California Climate Action Corps\, a program of California Volunteers\, Office of the Governor. \nWe need 25 volunteers for this event\, please register here.
