SUMMARY:Autumn and Impressionism in Southern California
DESCRIPTION:Who says LA doesn’t have seasons? Autumn is when our oak woodland and chaparral plant communities adapt to natural drought cycles and prepare for winter growth. Migrating birds head southward along the Pacific Flyway\, molting into their feathery fall fashions as they establish winter territories and feed on autumn seeds. Native plants put the rust in rustic as they copper and bronze into modest shades of amber\, umber\, and golden dormancy. \nJoin us for a guided walk of Rosemont Preserve\, where we’ll identify several ways that native plants and animals signal seasonal change. Come for the soft warm auburns\, stay for the deep rich ochres\, and learn to discern a number of other sun-scented fall colors that inspired local Impressionist painters like Willam Wendt\, Granville Redmond\, and Anna Althea Hills. Samples from these artists and more will be displayed. Tour will led by Friends of Rosemont Preserve\, Jacob Lang and Theodore Lee. \nParking available at Two Strike Park\, 5107 Rosemont Ave

To participate as a docent\, volunteers should have general availability during this time frame and are asked to lead a minimum of four trips over the course of the school year. \nNative Plant Training\nWed.\, September 9\, 9:00AM-11:30AM\nLearn about our regional native plants from Kyle Cavazos\, AFC’s Program Director. AFC’s native plant training covers identifying plants\, adaptations to our climate\, and uses of plants by Indigenous communities. \nAvifauna Training\nThurs.\, September 10\, 9:00AM-11:30AM\nLearn about our local avifauna from TJ Hastings\, Occidental College Avian Biology Teaching Assistant and former AFC intern. DESCRIPTION:Join Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy for a morning focused on connecting the BIPOC community through nature! Enjoy champurrado and small bites while surrounded by the San Gabriel Mountains at Rosemont Preserve. Through discussions\, crafts\, and connections we’ll explore how the “Nature Gap” affects our communities. \nParticipants will rotate through a series of activities starting with a group discussion. We’ll then move into a creative activity making Hojalatas\, a traditional Mexican tin folk art\, using nature as inspiration. Lastly\, we’ll work together to bring life back to retired flower beds by planting narrowleaf milkweed to help support Monarch butterflies. Together\, these activities work towards environmental justice through community\, crafts\, and conservation. \nAll craft materials and outdoor blankets will be provided. No experience necessary\, just come ready to learn\, create\, and spend time outdoors together!
