In this workshop you will experiment with composition\, movement\, light\, and perspective to explore the genre of abstract photography using Rosemont Preserve as your subject. \nAlthea will help you develop a portfolio of creative\, expressive photographs that move beyond documentation and allow viewers to see the natural world through a new perspective. \nPhotographers of any skill level are encouraged to attend and we invite you to submit the images you take in the workshop to our Nature Photography Contest! \nPlease register below.

DESCRIPTION:Join Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy for a morning focused on connecting the BIPOC community through nature! Enjoy champurrado and small bites while surrounded by the San Gabriel Mountains at Rosemont Preserve. Through discussions\, crafts\, and connections we’ll explore how the “Nature Gap” affects our communities. \nParticipants will rotate through a series of activities starting with a group discussion. We’ll then move into a creative activity making Hojalatas\, a traditional Mexican tin folk art\, using nature as inspiration. Lastly\, we’ll work together to bring life back to retired flower beds by planting narrowleaf milkweed to help support Monarch butterflies. Together\, these activities work towards environmental justice through community\, crafts\, and conservation. \nAll craft materials and outdoor blankets will be provided. No experience necessary\, just come ready to learn\, create\, and spend time outdoors together! We recommend wearing pants\, long sleeves\, and sturdy shoes. If available\, feel free to bring any of the following tools: shovels\, spades\, loppers\, hatchets\, clippers. With these skills\, you can help connect youth to nature by guiding field trips for K-12 students from all over LA County throughout the school year! \nField trips take place at Rosemont Preserve from September through June\, on Wednesday to Friday mornings\, and last approximately 1.5 hours. To participate as a docent\, volunteers should have general availability during this time frame and are asked to lead a minimum of four trips over the course of the school year. \nAvifauna Training\nWed.\, January 28\, 9:00AM-11:30AM\nLearn about our local avifauna from Pasadena Audubon Society’s Community Engagement Liaison Jodhan Fine. AFC’s avifauna training teaches you about the birds commonly seen at Rosemont Preserve and dives into species identification and avian evolution. \nGeology Training\nThurs.\, January 29\, 9:00AM-11:30AM\nLearn about our local geology from Geophysicist Doug Given. AFC’s geology training covers a wide variety of concepts from plate tectonics to watersheds to the rock cycle. \nNative Plant Training\nFri.\, January 30\, 9:00AM-11:30AM\nLearn about our regional native plants from AFC Land Manager Tim Martinez.
