AFC's Nature Photography Contest
We know photographs not only share the beauty of nature, but can help us connect more deeply to the natural world. That’s why we encourage all photographers, nature enthusiasts, biologists, artists, and wildlife admirers to go out into the beautiful landscapes of Southern California and take some images! Anyone over the age of 15, amateur and professional photographers alike, are welcome to apply to our annual Nature Photography Contest.
Our 2026 contest runs from June 1st – August 1st. Please use the buttons below to read the rules and submit!
HOW TO APPLY
Please read these details carefully before submitting your images.
We have 7 categories, of which entrants are allowed to submit a maximum of 2 images, totaling 14 submissions:
- Birds: Native birds of any species, in any setting.
- Mammals: Native wildlife particular to our region.
- Other Wildlife: Native underwater life, reptiles, amphibians, insects, spiders, and more.
- Plants: Macro or micro, focused especially on native plants.
- Landscapes: Vistas showcasing the wild open spaces and urban/wild interface.
- People in Nature: Humans enjoying, restoring, or interacting with the natural environment.
- Abstract/Conceptual: Experimental or abstract compositions drawing inspiration from the natural world and our relationship to it.
Entries must be taken in Southern California within the last 5 years. No images created with AI will be accepted. Manipulated images are only accepted in the Abstract/Conceptual Category. Please read Contest Rules for details.
When submitting your images, you must title your file using the following format:
Lastname_Category_Entrynumber (for example, Muir_Landscapes_01)
Images must be submitted as .jpegs or.pngs with a minimum 3,000px on the longest size, and no larger than 10MB.
2026 Judges
We are honored to welcome back Denis Callet, Althea Edwards, and Neal Parekh as our 2026 Photography Contest Judges!
🌿 Denis Callet is a wildlife photographer and camera trapper. Emigrating to the United States from France, Denis was inspired by the vast natural landscapes of the US. He developed a passion and talent for photography and wildlife education and conservation. Denis aims to inspire compassion and appreciation for wildlife from his photography. See Denis’ work here.
🌿 Althea Edwards is an artist and photographer born and raised in Northeast LA. She explores LA with her camera and artistic eye, and runs a boutique photographic and visual arts workshop. On quiet mornings she often can be found at Rosemont Preserve photographing wildlife and artistically expressing her connection to the natural world. See Althea’s work here.
🌿 Neal is a nature and wildlife photographer dedicated to capturing the intricate beauty and diversity of the natural world. His images emphasize the deep connection between wildlife and their environments, aiming to foster a meaningful bond between his audience and his subjects. Neal believes that photography has the power to increase self-awareness and reveal the complex interdependencies of our planet, encouraging positive change. The moments he has captured on his adventures have been featured in exhibitions and publications, continuing to inspire and motivate others. See Neal’s work here.

From over 160 submissions our judges selected these seven images as our category winners.
After the judges selected these 7 winners, we shared them with the public for a Viewer’s Choice Award. 344 people submitted votes on which category winner was their favorite. All the winning images were displayed at our inaugural Urban Conservation Awards at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Elyse is a wildlife photographer based in Los Angeles. She highlights local and endangered species, with the goal of inspiring viewers to become conservation advocates. You can see more of her work here.

Valeree is a visual artist and sustainability strategist based in Los Angeles. She enjoys wildlife photography, birding, camping, plein air painting, and sharing her love for nature, art, and community through educational workshops and events. You can see more of her work here.

Feast by Erin Doyle
A certified California naturalist, Erin began her amateur study of native plants and ecosystems in 2019 after growing a patch of Narrow Leaf Milkweed from seed in her yard. Her photography has since been published in two field guides, and she regularly documents insect life during volunteer days at AFC’s Sunshine Preserve. You can see more of her work here.

Freaky Fish by Moses Aubrey
Moses is on a mission to document everything from jumping spiders to slender salamanders to migratory birds. In his series “Have you seen me?” he highlights biodiversity in urban LA and across the US. Currently he is a coordinator at the community science dept at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and loves bringing various communities out to experience nature. Storm Clouds by Jason Moss
Jason is a composer, music producer, creative director, and music supervisor, creating original music for film, television, and advertising. Photography is a life-long passion and he loves crafting images that blur the lines between reality and imagination, using every tool at his disposal (except AI). You can see more of his work here.

Over 400 people submitted votes on which category winner should be displayed at the 2024 P-22 Day Festival.
