Sunshine Preserve

Sunshine Preserve is a crucial wildlife passageway in Glendale, just up the hill from Verdugo Park. A wonderful Glendale community member donated the 3.5 acre Sunshine Preserve to AFC in 2020. When we began to assess the property for its ecological value we learned this passageway, that critically connects the San Rafael Hills to the Verdugo Mountains, was being used by apex predators like mountain lions and bobcats. We even tracked P-41 and Nikita to the area! We saw the potential for this corridor to be enhanced through stewardship to better support passage and habitat for both large mammals and small pollinators like bees and Monarch Butterflies.

Habitat & Wildlife

Upon arriving at Sunshine Preserve, visitors can immediately appreciate the tranquility of the Preserve and the importance of having habitat for native flora and fauna near a highly urban area. Sunshine contains both coastal sage scrub and chaparral plant communities, highlighting the beautiful native plant diversity of the Verdugo Mountains. Remote wildlife cameras have captured animals moving along the upper ridgeline of the Preserve, highlighting the important role that this land plays for local wildlife as they move between the San Rafael Hills and the Verdugo Mountains.

Mule deer are commonly spotted, and you may see them along the ridgeline when visiting. Other mammals that can be found at the Sunshine include bobcats, coyotes, desert cottontail rabbits, and California ground squirrels. A variety of bird species have been spotted, including the California thrasher, American robin, California scrub jay, California towhee, mourning dove, western meadowlark, black-headed grosbeak, lazuli bunting, and yellow-rumped warbler, red-tailed hawks, and owls, making it a wonderful spot to enjoy local bird diversity. The Preserve harbors plenty of insect diversity and is also a great place to observe reptiles such as the western side-blotched lizard and the Southern Pacific rattlesnake.

Friends of Sunshine Preserve

Since acquiring the property, so much hard work has been done by The Friends of Sunshine. The Friends are a volunteer-led committee that oversees the restoration and programs on the property. Some of their accomplishments include:

  • Removing invasive fire-hazardous grasses that plagued the hillside
  • Replacing invasive species with new native ones
  • Creating walking paths through the preserve, lined with native plants
  • Removing non-native trees like Eucalyptus
  • Advocating for the prevention of developments that would block this wildlife corridor

The Friends and their community of volunteers usually meet the 3rd Saturday of every month. You can follow them on Instagram for all Sunshine related news and to stay updated on when you can join them to maintain this beautiful habitat! @thesunshinepreserve
